A blog is a great place to share more detailed information, links, resources, and more. But it can be confusing to know what is required, how it works, and how to get started.
Here is exactly how I started my own blog!
1. Pick a domain name
A domain name is essentially your web address, what you type in to get to your site. For example, mine is “shelbypharmd.com”
If you already have a brand or username on other social websites, I would stick with that. Try to make sure it is easy to remember and easy to type in (avoid lots of symbols)
I purchased my domain through Bluehost, my web hosting site, but there are many others available. Most will provide an initial discount.
2. Pick your web hosting and a blogging platform
Web Hosting is where your website is stored, including the code. It is required in order to have a website. This part confused me the most.
Blog Platforms are used to allow you to design your blog. The most common one I see is WordPress. Others include Wix, Squarespace, etc. I went with WordPress because it seemed the most customizable.
I decided to use BlueHost for my web host because they had great customer service, well priced, and relatively easy to use.
Disclaimer: If you decide to sign-up for hosting through my affiliate link, I will receive a commission.
Below is the easy step-by-step process of how to sign-up with Bluehost:
Step 1: Visit Bluehost.com
Step 2: Choose a hosting plan that works best for you (I used the Basic plan)
Step 3: Choose your domain name
Step 4: Enter required information
Step 5: Choose your package and any add-ons you want
Step 6: Add your payment information
Step 7: Create your password
You are now the proud owner of your blog!
When you log in, BlueHost allows you to pick a theme. You can easily change this whenever you want or upload one into WordPress from elsewhere.
Now it’s time to get familar with how WordPress works, I recommend playing around with the different buttons. You can also watch Youtube videos that walk you through this.
Additional tips:
I highly recommend getting Elementor, which is a free add-on and makes it easier to edit your blog in a more realistic view instead of directly through WordPress.
Youtube has great tutorials on this.
Happy blogging!
